We’re FRIENDS of the Market!

MARKET CENTRAL is a non-profit organization dedicated to

preserving and enhancing the markets sponsored by the City of Charlottesville.

The Charlottesville City Market is an operation of the City of Charlottesville Parks & Recreation Department.  Despite exposure to weather, funding limitations, and two changes of location, the City Market has thrived and continues to grow.  But the Market’s future is by no means assured, if only because it lacks a permanent home.  The time has come to find that home, and make that future real.

To meet the challenge of preserving the future of our beloved Charlottesville City Market, vendors and patrons of the market formed the nonprofit foundation, MARKET CENTRAL, Inc.  Now the founding members are reaching out to the community – to you.  We ask you to join us in creating a permanent farmers’ market that will stand as an economic asset and a cultural attraction for our region for decades to come.   (Donate/become a member here!)

By far the biggest challenge facing the City Market is location.  To date, the City has donated space for this event.  But, as Charlottesville grows, and space becomes scarce, the market faces the prospect of losing its current home.

Thus Market Central’s initial mission:  Raise funds and awareness to create a permanent home, where the community can enjoy better access to local farmers, crafters, and food producers year-round, in any weather.  In pursuing that goal, Market Central maintains a strong relationship with City Council and city administrators.  We also remain committed to serving our community through charitable and educational outreach.

The Charlottesville City Market and Market Central join forces with shared goals:

  1. Preserve the concept of selling farm fresh and handmade products directly to the consumer, and to allow customers the opportunity to interact directly with the farmer, baker or craftsman.

  2. Provide growers and producers of local fruit, vegetables, plants and flowers alternative marketing opportunities in their own community.

  3. Encourage an educational forum for consumers to learn the uses and benefits of quality locally grown or prepared food products.

  4. Provide a safe, low cost place for local, family-owned and operated businesses to experiment and grow.

  5. Serve the community by working with other local organizations to create programming and volunteer opportunities.
