We’re FRIENDS of the Market!
MARKET CENTRAL is a non-profit organization dedicated to
preserving and enhancing the markets sponsored by the City of Charlottesville.
Survey collection has been completed!
Over the summer, the City Market was host to a Jefferson Public Citizens team of three undergraduate students and one graduate student: Anne De Chastonay, Carla Jones, Natalie Roper and Erica Stratton. Jefferson Public Citizens is a program that integrates community service and research experiences. Teams work together with a community partner to help conduct research that would be valuable to the community. This project derived from each of the participants being passionate about the importance of farmers markets in communities and our love for Charlottesville’s City Market in particular. Market Central is proud to be their community partner, along with other community members and UVA faculty, to determine what information would be valuable in helping the Market grow and prosper. Their preliminary results are in: read more here.
What were they doing?
Every Saturday, our Charlottesville City Market brings the Water Street lot to life, bursting with families, college students, grandparents and vendors, eating tamales, drinking coffee, and waiting in line for donuts. The lot transforms into our ‘community living room’: a space that we love and look forward to being a part of every week. We have a wonderful market and so much of that is because of the people that support it each week! As the market moves into a stage of growth and faces the daunting task of finding a permanent location, we see the importance of gathering basic information on our current market and its patrons:
•Who comes to the Market?
•What do you love about it?
•What would make you love it even more?
This survey information is being passed on to the City Market Task Force and City Council to provide them with information to help make educated decisions on the market’s future. As the City Market enters a stage of growth and maturity, stakeholder’s input is more important than ever!
